First grade art students see me for five consecutive days and then rotate through the other specials at Conn. I use storytelling, song, and literature to help students relate to concepts we study in art. Every day is started with a song, a story, or a piece of art that serves as our inspiration for our daily project.
For our first unit of art, I help students turn their imaginations loose as we create imaginative art work. We read Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, and create wild things of our own though drawing and painting. We create robots with markers that are designed to do something helpful to us, for example a homework-bot or a cookie-bot. We also take a look at Jim Henson's Muppets and learn how to draw our own Muppets using exaggerated shapes.
