During our first unit in specials, Conn's fifth grade students have been taking a look at the work of Renee Magritte, a Belgian Surrealist painter. Surrealism is the art of painting the impossible convincingly. Referencing Magritte's False Mirror, (pictured left) students created a realistic drawing of their eyes with a subject of their own choosing reflected in their irises.
For the first time, art students are using Edmodo, a safe, educational setting for sharing art with each other and creating digital portfolios. Students also can participate in polls and group discussions. Students voted on their favorite piece of artwork by Magritte, which ended up being Galconde, or as the kids call it, "It's Raining Men." Ask your student to show you his/her Edmodo page from home!
We are also gearing up for our first quarter focus area, Design Lab. This new class will focus on practical applications of art through architectural, product, and graphic design.
